    Foundation Engineering

    It is a branch of civil engineering which associated with design, construction, maintenance and renovation of structures below ground level. It is also known as Substructure engineering.

    Types of Foundations

    There are two types of foundations namely,

    1. Shallow Foundations

    • Continuous strip footing
    • Isolated footing - Rectangular, Square, Circular
    • Combined Footing - Rectangular, Trapezoidal, Strap
    • Raft or Mat

    2. Deep Foundations

    • Piles
    • Piers
    • Well or Caissons

    Shallow Foundations :

    When the depth is equal to or less than its width is called a shallow foundation.

    Deep Foundations :

    When the depth is equal to or greater than its width is called a shallow foundation.
